Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God (Matthew 5:9).

In Scripture, blessed means happy, a type of contentedness, an inner peace, a state of restfulness that is not created from or affected by circumstances or emotions that are ever-changing. It is a state of well-being and inner joy, rooted and grounded in the truth of Jesus Christ, who never changes. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever (Hebrews 13:8). Jesus contrasts the world’s definition of happiness with true blessedness, which is spiritual prosperity, having the gift of eternal life. This only comes from having a right relationship with God through faith in Christ (Romans 5:1).

The peace that surpasses all understanding is the peace that is given to believers when we come to faith in Jesus by God’s grace. Through trusting in Christ alone for salvation, believers are justified and made right with God. Being made right with God means being at peace with Him. Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ (Romans 5:1). Believers are saved from His eternal wrath and granted eternal life by grace through faith, which produces a peace that surpasses all understanding; a peace the world cannot give us (John 14:27). When we are given that gift of peace from God, followers of Jesus will naturally commit to making peace with others as being imitators of what Christ did for us. Making peace with others is an outward expression of our inward faith in Jesus and our love for the Lord and others.

If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone (Romans 12:18).
