Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3).
 
Jesus said the only way a person can enter the kingdom of heaven is by being born again. Born again (or born from above) holds the idea to become children of God through trusting in Jesus. We are all born in sin, so to become children of God, we must be born again by God’s grace. We are born again the moment we come to saving faith in Jesus, in which God gives us a whole new nature where we put off the old sinful self, and we put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:24). 
 
To believe in Christ is not just mere intellectual assent that He is God and Lord of the universe, for even demons know that to be true (James 2:19). Rather, it is a deep, personal, unwavering conviction that Jesus is the Savior of the world, which leads to a desire to submit to Him as Lord (the volitional element of saving faith). Trusting in Jesus results in receiving a new nature that produces a change in heart, leading to a transformed life. It is not merely an empty profession of faith while continuing to live in unbroken patterns of ongoing sin. Struggling with sin is normal for any believer. Living in sin is not.
