Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another as God in Christ forgave you (Ephesians 4:32).

The root origin of how to love one’s enemies is to first experience being loved as an enemy of God Himself. If God forgave me by dying for me while I was still His enemy, in order that I may be saved, how could I not also forgive my enemies and their comparably small offenses towards me? We are never more like God than when we forgive others. For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses (Matthew 6:14-15). “Your enemy is anyone who resists you, who contradicts you, who crosses you, who antagonizes you.” – John Piper.

Loving my enemy is to be an illustration to the rest of the world that Jesus is my supreme satisfaction. When I have Jesus, I don’t need to seek revenge for those who have hurt me. Nor do I need to chase after money or material things that God has ordained to be taken from me by my enemy. I trust Jesus. Vengeance is His, and He will supply all that I need on His time. I am to exalt the glory of Christ to others by demonstrating love to my enemies through forgiveness, blessings, and prayers over their lives. It’s all about Jesus and pointing others to Him for salvation; it’s not about me.
